Winifred Williams

Age: 32

Sex: female

Date: 8 Apr 1962

Place: 17 Meeting House Lane, Peckham

Winifred Williams died from an attempted abortion, however it was not possible to state whether it was self-inflicted or whether any third party had been involved.

She had been a coloured woman.

When the police searched her room at 17 Meeting House Lane in Peckham they found a syringe.

She had previously stayed at a house in Leytonstone with her two-year-old boy but had been asked to leave by the landlord who said:

I gave her a month's notice in October as I found out about her boyfriend staying all night. I have reason to suspect that he even had a key.

He said that she had been very friendly with another tenant who would occasionally spend the night with her.

Of the woman's death, the landlord said:

At midnight I heard a thumping on the wall. I rushed upstairs thinking something had happened to her child, and found her dead. I noticed a strong peppermint smell, the same smell which existed when she was living here before.
